Abuse of Power Now, in my book, forcing someone to perform a sex act against their will is rape. How is it that a police officer using the accoutrements and power of his position to rape someone might get off without even jail time? This is an example of the worst sort of abuse of power. The power of the position makes resistance dangerous in nearly as many...or perhaps even more...ways that aquiescing to the unconscionable. Nor is her alleged profession an excuse. Under our enlightened philosophy that removed the theory of the Divine Right of Kings to abuse their citizens at will simply because they were "better' and "more important" people, the law should be blind to who commits and who is victimized by the crime. This was a shameful action regardless of who did it and, in the eyes of justice, the punishment is not enough and in the eyes of those putting trust in our protectors and public servants it is a much, much more significant blow.
