Abdominal Obesity – a national problem in Malaysia A health survey in Malaysia has revealed shocking information on abdominal obesity in this country. This survey found that about 47.1% of men and 60.2% women in Malaysia suffer from this disorder. Abdominal obesity increases the risk cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. The survey was carried out in 1893 patients using the waist circumference as the main indicator. Researchers who carried out this survey found that people with large waist circumference were suffering from a number of diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and hypertensive diseases. This survey has shown that waist circumference can be considered as an important indicator to predict cardiovascular diseases. Increased fat deposition in liver and other internal organs can lead to a condition called ‘insulin resistance’, where the insulin in the body is not able to inject enough glucose in the cells, which increases the blood glucose levels, resulting in diabetes and other heart diseases. Note the definition of obesity in this study: people are considered obese if their waist circumference exceeds 90cm(35.4 inch)for men, 80cm(31.5 inch)for women.
More common(e.g. in the US) is > 40 inch for men, > 35 inch for women. This of course affects the percentages.
