ABC's Mini-Series Decision: Only Half Right ABC presumably knew that it was buying a fictionalized account of the events and knowing that, it should have added the disclaimers before distributing 'preview' copies of the mini-series. The disclaimers were not, of course, there on the preview copies and that suggests that ABC was playing a political 'game' by intentionally trashing the Presidency of Bill Clinton. Why ABC might have wanted to take that particular road is something we'll have to wait to find out when an ABC executive publishes his memoirs. Oh you could believe the critics of the mini-series who say that this is just another case of a big corporation (Disney) kowtowing to the Republicans, but I'd prefer to hear it from the horses mouth . . . instead of his rear end. When the preview copies of the mini-series were viewed by Bill Clinton and the others who were depicted in the mini-series they, understandably, went 'nuclear.' That may have been because their less than favorable depictions were untrue or it may have been because the mini-series was too accurate. Either way, when ABC started receiving a barrage of complaints from the Clintonites they should have responded by saying, 'OK, we'll add the disclaimers but the mini-series runs as it is. One can only imagine what went on behind the scenes to cause ABC to extensively revise the 'offensive' scenes but if you imagine some very serious threats from a particular sitting U.S. Senator, you would probably not be far off the mark. Curiously (and I say that with 'tongue-in-cheek') when the mini-series was viewed by the Republicans who were depicted in the film, not nearly as much criticism was heard. The mini-series is not, by any means a Republican 'love-feast;' it is nearly as critical of George W. Bush's administration and of his father's administration as it is of Clinton's, but after these years of taking hits from Michael Moore, Oliver Stone and many hundreds of other Hollywood elites, the Republicans may have become desensitized to criticism. Desensitized...or perhaps they can accept criticism with a bit more grace than, say, threatening governmental action.
