SURVIVOR: Lord of the Flies II?

by Lonnie Hodge OMBW's CHINA BLOG

RACISM

Remember Jane Elliott, the trainer, and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education? In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. over thirty years ago, she was the one who devised the "Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes" exercise. It was a Cliff Notes in-class version of Lord of the Flies. Participants were labeled as inferior or superior based upon the color of their eyes. The kids involved got a brutally quick taste of what it was like to belong to a minority group.

Now the reality show Survivor is aiming to add a less than educational twist to this exercise on its show: Contestants will be divided into four tribes by ethnicity. Yep, that means blacks, whites, Latinos and Asians will be in separate groups. Maybe they will take on hip names like the Sharks and Jets.

CBS' Early Show. Host Jeff Probst says the idea "actually came from the criticism that 'Survivor' was not ethnically diverse enough." He says the twist fits in perfectly with what "Survivor" does, saying the show is "a social experiment. And this is adding another layer to that experiment." Probst says contestants had mixed reactions to the racial divisions. Imagine that!

The next crew of Survivors are stranded on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. They include a police officer, a heavy metal guitarist, an attorney and a nail salon manager. Maybe CBS can have an online contest before the show where you guess which ethnic group belongs to which job. And maybe Rodney King can guest narrate the first episode.

They may need the old WWI manual: HTSAJ

Can't we all just get along.....without stupid TV shows?
