Mike Wallace Interviews Madcap Iranian President Ahmadinejad

It doesn't get much better for a professional journalist than to land an interview with a well-known, belligerent world leader who hates America and whose sanity is obviously in question. Nor does it get much better for the belligerent world leader who gets a televised platform for propaganda and the chance to hoodwink the world by being charming in front of the camera.

Therefore, the Mike Wallace interview of Iran's madcap President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for CBS' "Sixty Minutes" must have been a mutually gratifying experience for both parties. Well, that's just great, good for them. Unfortunately, as a member of the television audience, it didn't do a thing for me and I suspect that was the case for millions of others.

Anybody who pays the least attention to the news and to what's going on in the world has already heard Ahmadinejad's rationalizations for why he hates America, why the Zionist entity must be destroyed and how Iran only wants nuclear energy, not nuclear bombs. Why do we need to hear him repeat it all to Mike Wallace?

Maybe it's simply for the fascination of being able to see a world-class wack job up close and personal. Or for those naive souls who are disinclined to believe there are truly evil people in the world (other than Republicans), maybe it's for the opportunity of being able to scrutinize his face, movements and interactions with the interviewer for signs of humaneness and rationality. The problem with that is, psychopathic tyrants can often be disarmingly amicable. For crying out loud, how many liberals has Castro managed to charm the pants off of over the years?

Listening to Ahmadgenocide -- er, excuse me, Ahmadinejad -- was like listening to Air America for a half hour. They basically share the same world view: The United States is the source of most problems in the world, Hezbollah is comprised of freedom fighters defending Lebanon against Zionist aggression, and if America can have nukes, why shouldn't Iran be able to?

There were some light-hearted moments during the interview to be sure. At one point, an assistant handed a note to Ahmadinejad. Asked what it was about, the president said he had been advised to rearrange his jacket. Wallace told him he looked "just fine" and subsequently asked him if he was "a vain man." Ahmadinejad replied that sometimes appearances are important and "that is why I comb my hair."

Ah, the banality of evil.

Even more amusing, thought unintentionally so, was when Ahmadinejad commented the following: "I am very saddened to hear that one percent of the total population [of the United States] is in prison. And 45 million people don't have health care coverage."

It sounded like something straight out of a 2004 John Edwards speech, right after the part about the "two Americas" and right before the story of how his father was a humble mill worker. I was practically screaming at the tv set for Wallace to ask him how many Iranians were in prison for political reasons. He didn't get around to it. And why is it that when an earthquake strikes Iran, 40,000 people die, but the same quake in the U.S. injures three and breaks some dishes.

Mike Wallace discussed his interview with the Iranian president on the Sean Hannity radio program and admitted that he didn't think the guy was so bad. What a surprise. Another liberal journalist smitten by a charming tyrant.

The interview was good that we hear it directly from the source, rather through another layer. He is a bit out there but he also has valid points. Remember Bush called Iran "axis of evil" which is provocation itself. A better understanding of the other side can only lead to better understanding and perhaps better policy. So far America is still pretty much blind as to why they hate us. THe hint here is that it is not because we love freedom and they don't.

It is people like you that make us americans look so stupid! Try reading the news before you talk.... and not just news written by America and Israel.
I think the interview was great and the guy made many good points, even though I dont care much about Iran, I think this guy is amazing and like Mike Wallace said he really IS intelligent!
