Israel Pounds Lebanon for Seventh Day

By VOA News
18 July 2006

Israeli warplanes are pounding Lebanon for a seventh straight day, as more Hezbollah rockets hit northern Israel.

The Israeli strikes hit several targets in Lebanon, including an army camp near Beirut where Lebanese military officials say at least 11 soldiers were killed.

Israeli aircraft also hit other targets in northern and southern Lebanon as well as a southern suburb of Beirut, which is a Hezbollah stronghold.

An Israeli artillery piece fires at a target in southern Lebanon near Kiryat Shmona, northern Israel, next to the Lebanese border, Tuesday July 18, 2006

Witnesses say at least six people died when a bomb hit a house in a village near the town of Bint Jbeil close to the Israeli border.

A Hezbollah rocket attack on the Israeli town of Nahariya, just south of the Lebanon border, has killed one person. Hezbollah rockets also hit Haifa, Israel's third largest city, today.  There are no reports of casualties.

Earlier today, a top Israeli military officer (Major General Udi Adam) said fewer Hezbollah rockets were reaching Israel.

Israel's deputy military chief of staff (Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky) says Israel will complete its military objectives in Lebanon "in a matter of weeks."  He says the possibility of a ground offensive has not been ruled out, but is not being planned at this time.

So far, at least 230 Lebanese and 25 Israelis have died in fighting that erupted after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers during a cross-border raid on July 12.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
