China's Apprentice Show Turns High Drama

Usually CCTV is to TV as Ping Pong is to professional sports. But, there has been a serious development in the "Win in China" reality show sponsored by Yahoo.cn's majority owner Alibaba.com. Alibaba is a Cinderella story Internet sourcing company that grew from a few thousand yuan into a company that now does billions in annual trade.
Win in China is a hybrid cross between the Apprentice and Survivor and brutalizes 36 contestants with physically and mentally challenging tasks like hiking up the Great Wall in heat so bad the Mongolians would have surrendered long before they reached it.

The show's stakes are huge: Win and you get 10,000,000 Yuan to start your own company (Over 1 Million U.S. dollars) and a 20% ownership stake in the venture. That is the up side.

The bad news: One competitor was so disheartened about losing he wrote a suicide note on the show's blog (I am so amazed by the number of uses for a blog these days) and is now missing.

I may have to give up my Korean Soap Operas and start tuning in.
