China deports Homer and the Simpsons ![]() According to Joe McDonald of API China has sent Homer and family home on a slow boat to America along with Mickey Mouse. And Pokemon, the favorite of epileptics everywhere, has been repatriated to Japan. Using the famous, "If you can't beat them, ban them" philosophy that rocketed Japan to economic success is being used by Beijing to protect Chinese animation. That puts The Monkey King. a Chinese creation, into the number one spot for viewing hours. That's one way to get ratings. The cartoon campaign is part of an effort by President Hu Jintao's government to de-westernize pop culture, ranging from movies to magazines and Web sites while trying to force feed home grown material to China's 250 million kids who prefer the creativity coming from America, Europe, Korea and Japan. McDonald reports that in April, the government disclosed it was no longer granting publishing licenses for foreign magazines in an effort to protect its domestic industry. That came after a joint venture that published a Chinese edition of "Rolling Stone" was forced to dissolve after a single issue. And TV stations have been told to limit foreign programming, stop showing scary movies in prime time and have their hosts dress more conservatively and use fewer English words while on the air. I am not sure how all of this will play out or if the kids or their parents will protest. I DO know that housewives will likely riot if Korean Soaps are pulled from the airwaves.
