British law against glorifying terrorism hasn't been wildly successful

Here's the headline to a New York Times article that absolutely reeks of understatement, given the recently exposed plot to blow up airliners en route from Britain to the United States: "British Law Against Glorifying Terrorism Has Not Silenced Calls to Kill for Islam."

And that exposed plot, by the way, was just one of many that are currently under investigation in Britain. It's the kind of thing one might expect if Britain were still lording over one or more of its Middle Eastern colonial possessions. At least then there would be a legitimate cause for resentment, if not for the murdering of innocent civilians.

But wait a minute, you might say. What about Iraq? Britain, along with the Great Satan, is trying to impose its will in Iraq, isn't it? Why, that's just more colonialism, isn't it?

Actually, no. What Britain's trying to do is help make Iraq a free country, which doesn't seem like such a nefarious thing. Presumably, freedom is one of the primary reasons so many Muslims have emigrated to Britain and other European countries. If so, then why would they oppose Iraq being freed from a mass-murdering dictator, most of whose victims, by the way, happened to be, uh, Muslims?

But don't try to reason it all out logically because you will be doomed to failure. Muslims can kill other Muslims to their hearts' content, until hell freezes over, in fact, and radical Islamists in Britain (and everywhere else) will yawn themselves to sleep every time. But let an infidel set foot on holy Islamic soil and try and make the place fit for human habitation, and they will preach violent jihad to the high heavens.

One such radical Islamist is Muhamad al-Massari who runs a website in Britain that celebrates the violent death of British and American soldiers. He says it gets tens of thousands of hits every day. Despite the British law mentioned in the New York Times headline, the Antiterrorism Act of 2006, Massari is glorifying terrorism left and right.

Just last week, the Council of Holy Warriors, a group affiliated with al-Qaida, posted a declaration on the site praising a suicide bombing in Iraq that killed or wounded 55 people. Massari has an up-front attitude about it all. "If you kill our civilians, we kill your civilians," he said in an interview.

So why isn't he being arrested under the British law? Jolly good question! Could it be that Britain no longer has that stiff upper lip it was once so famous for?
