Assad says America's notion of Middle East change is "an illusion," will remain basket case instead

Bashar Assad, presumed dictator-for-life of Syria and staunch supporter of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations devoted to the destruction of Israel, wasted no time after the recent Middle East cease-fire to declare that America's plan for a "new Middle East" had just gone up in smoke. It's pretty uppity talk for someone who columnist Mark Steyn recently described as Iran's "Sunni Arab prison bitch."

Nonetheless, Assad said this in a speech to a journalists' association conference: "The Middle East they aspire to . . . has become an illusion."

In other words, anybody that's looking to change the Middle East from its current basket case status of ignorance, poverty, fanaticism, moral bankruptcy and never-ending strife into something a little more decent had better think twice. And it's all because Hezbollah stood up to the Zionist regime without being destroyed. Oh, happy day!

If I can offer further interpretation of what Assad seems to be saying, it is that the hapless residents of this sad region are perfectly content to continue to live under the sway of mentally unbalanced, tinhorn dictators who do nothing to improve their current lives or future prospects and instead harp endlessly about the Zionist regime, inferring that once it has finally been destroyed, the desert will blossom under unblemished Islamism.

Talk about illusions.

But when is the Zionist regime ever going to actually be destroyed so that Middle Easterners can finally move on to their grand destiny? Well, that's a bit tricky. Assad put it this way:

"We tell them (Israelis) that after tasting humiliation in the latest battles, your weapons are not going to protect you -- not your planes or missiles or even your nuclear bombs . . . The future generations in the Arab world will find a way to defeat Israel."

Future generations? That's Assad's bold prediction? The Arab world has to stagnate for a few more generations before they get any real satisfaction? If that's the best Assad has to offer, the new in-vogue chant on the Arab street might become, "Death to our leaders! Behead those who insult our intelligence!"

Even better would be: "Give us democracy so we can choose our own leaders, define our own aspirations and catch up with the rest of the civilized world!"

Alas, more illusions, like a desert mirage.
