An Alternative Peace Plan to Armageddon Now 1) that Israel reach out to the Lebanese whose lives it has devastated and offer to redirect about 1/3 of the aid that it receives annually from the U.S. to rebuilding the destruction that it has wrought. 2) that Israel negotiate a settlement of its holdings of Syria in return for a guarantee that it and Iran discontinue sending military supplies to Hezbollzh -- with the fail safe that Israel could do to Syria what it has done to Lebanon to halt such. 3) that the U.S. negotiate a program of supervision of the nuclear plant development in Iran in return for not seeking economic sanctions on Iraq for continuing the possible construction of a nuclear weapon -- with the fail safe that the U.S. and Israel could do to Iran what Israel has done to Lebanon and the possibility eventually of an all out nuclear war down the line which would make most of the Middle East and much of the rest of the world uninhabitable. 4) that the U.S. and Britain work towards removing their troops from Afghanistan and Iraq -- with the promise of on-going financial aid to rebuild the destruction with which they have afflicted the two countries -- based on the condition that each achieves and maintains peace among its warring factions. All should recall that both Pakistan and India have nuclear weapons already and each could presumably devastate the other and, again, make much of the world uninhabitable. Probably possible outbreaks of hostilities there are what we should all be fearing. Not a few of my students who have migrated from the Ukraine have suffered from the after effects of the nuclear dusting there -- serious life-threatening cancers at an early age. A carelessly provoked outbreak of war down the line (such as the Lebanon one seems to be) with such weapons of human destruction is what we all ultimately have to worry about. And lest we forget, Pat Roberson, a major Bush supporter, is slavering for Armageddon Now. -- "A war is just if there is no alternative, and the resort to arms is legitimate if they represent your last hope."
