Roger Federer Reaches Wimbledon Semifinals By VOA Sports 05 July 2006
World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer has reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, extending his winning streak on grass courts to 46 straight matches. Federer overcame two rain delays to beat Croatian Mario Ancic (6-4, 6-4, 6-4). Ancic is the last man to have defeated Federer at the All England Club, winning a first round match in 2002. Federer takes on Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, who scored a five-set win over 14th seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic (7-6, 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, and 6-4). At 34 years old, Bjorkman is the oldest player to make the Wimbledon semifinals since Jimmy Connors in 1987. Also, 18th-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat former champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in four sets (6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2). Bagdahtis takes on either world number two Rafael Nadal of Spain or Jarkko Nieminen of Finland. Their match was postponed because of rain. Some information for this report was provided by AFP..
