Kashmir Grenade Attack Kills Two, Wounds 20 By VOA News 08 July 2006 Five people have been killed and 45 others have been wounded in a grenade attack on a crowd at a Muslim shrine in Indian Kashmir. Police suspect Islamic militants, but there has been no claim of responsibility for Saturday's attack in the town of Kulgam, about 60 kilometers south of the summer capital of Srinagar. National Conference Party leader, Sakina Itoo, was among a group of politicians at the shrine. Itoo, who has survived five assassination attempts, received only slight injuries. However the dead included local district leader and member of the opposition National Conference Party, Ghulam Nabi. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since 1989 in fighting between security forces and militant separatist groups in Indian Kashmir. Separatist groups based in Pakistan want Kashmir independence or a merger with Pakistan. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
