Iran Calls Incentive Package 'Acceptable Basis' By VOA News 16 July 2006 Iran says an incentives package presented last month by six world powers is an "acceptable basis" for negotiations on its nuclear program. A Foreign Ministry spokesman also warned Sunday that taking the issue of Iran's nuclear program to the U.N. Security Council is not constructive and will derail negotiations. Earlier this week, the U.S., Britain, France, China, Russia (the five permanent Security Council members) and Germany announced they will refer Iran to the Security Council because of Tehran's failure to reply to an offer of incentives if it suspends uranium enrichment. The six world powers presented the incentives package to Tehran early last month. They had asked Iranian officials to reply before the Group of Eight summit began Saturday in Russia. The U.S. and others accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, but Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes. Published reports say the package includes a promise to support the building of light water power reactors in Iran - if Tehran stops enriching uranium.
