How to spot a Jap in China (Circa 1942)

by Lonnie Hodge OMBW

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I was at a badminton tournament (one of three Chinese blood sports: Kung Fu and Ping Pong being the other two) recently and the head of a college's Foreign Affairs Department told me that I could not possibly have identified a player from the year before because "Caucasians cannot tell one Asian from another." He went on to tell me not to worry because he had the same problem. "All Caucasians look alike" he said with sincerity. You could have knocked me over with a feathered birdie. I was dumbstruck (yes, I can be quiet!) for quite a while.

I was wondering how and when to write about this when I came across a fascinating post on Asiapundit.

Are you old enough to remember Terry and the Pirates? I am not, but my grandfather told me about the comic strip (I wish) done by Milton Caniff. Well, like a lot of writers and great artistic talents he was recruited during WWII AND did illustrations for manuals. He is the talent behind the soldier's Pocket Guide to China and a chapter called "How to Spot a Jap." This might make you wonder if the author (Not Caniff) borrowed his logic from Hitler's nose measuring scientists:

HOW TO SPOT A JAP IN CHINA

HOW TO SPOT A JAP IN CHINA 2

MORE WAYS TO SPOT A JAP IN CHINA

MORE WAYS TO SPOT A JAP IN CHINA

EVEN MORE WAYS TO SPOT A JAP IN CHINA

I can't tell you what a relief it is that I will finally be able to ID these goat-footed, lemon-colored, buck-toothed lisping paranoids in a Guangzhou crowd.
