A GOOD FRIEND SHIELDS YOU FROM THE STORM*: BILIS IN CHINA Mother Nature needs a stern talk from Child Protective Services. It is another rough year around the globe and China, especially in areas near me, is being repeatedly abused. China is a big country and endures big losses. As with India we tend to be immunized against the shock of huge tragedies in both countries. I live where I can see the faces of the people who do not make policies and for whom losses are no less traumatizing. ![]() The death toll from events caused by tropical storm Bilis has increased to 228. But the number of lives lost is not the most disturbing statistic: Fujian province has really seen the worst of the weather this year. On July 16, rainstorms and winds left 43 dead and 24 others missing. The death toll in the southern part of my province of Guangdong rose to 63 while at least 156 people are still missing. Almost 27 million people have been impacted in some way in southern and eastern provinces. According to China News the heavy rains and floods have destroyed 212,000 houses, damaged another 287,000 and have forced three million local residents to evacuate. Nealy 7 million Guangdong residents have been affected and over a million have been relocated. To make matters worse it is predicted that as Bilis calms the ravaged areas have a major heat wave en-route. Fujian province issued a heat warning on Thursday morning when the peak temperature reached over 38 degrees (104 in the West) complete with shirt drenching humidity. China just replaced Japan as the world's second largest contributor of humanitarian aid only a year after leaving the global bread line herself. But, the economic devastation may idle some efforts as costs are already in the billions of Yuan. One can only hope that North Korea, to whom China has been a great humanitarian friend, has to spend more money on food and less on weapons. Mind you, I don't wish catastrophe on anyone to facilitate that hope. *A GOOD FRIEND SHIELDS YOU FROM THE STORM (Chinese Proverb) China Asia Blogging Expats China Blog Hurricanes Cancer China Pictures Floods Natural Disaters North Korea Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
