France Celebrates Advance to World Cup Final By VOA Sports 06 July 2006 Tens of thousands of World Cup football (soccer) fans have poured into French streets following a semifinal victory by their men's national team. France defeated Portugal, 1-0, Wednesday in Munich, Germany to advance to the final. France will play Italy in Berlin on Sunday for the World Cup title. Most fans remained peaceful but excited, climbing monuments in Paris and dancing through the streets of several French cities. But the celebration was deadly for one fan who climbed on top of a subway train at the Opera metro station, in central Paris, and fell at around midnight local time. Scattered violence was also reported as raucous fans got out of hand in Lyon. Some cars there were set on fire and vandalized.
