Coalition Soldier, 5 Militants Killed in Afghanistan

By VOA News
07 July 2006

The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan says five militants and a coalition soldier have been killed and another soldier wounded in a clash in southern Afghanistan.

Coalition officials say militants attacked a military convoy in Helmand province Thursday. Officials say troops returned fire, killing the attackers.

Separately, a member of the Afghan parliament said Friday coalition forces opened fire on a car carrying members of his family, killing one and wounding four others. The incident in being investigated.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai says foreign terrorists are responsible for the recent surge in militant attacks in his country.

Mr. Karzai told reporters today during his visit to Japan that the terrorists are trained, equipped and financed abroad and sent to Afghanistan. He urged more regional cooperation, particularly from neighboring Pakistan, to eliminate what he called the source of terrorism in Afghanistan.

Britain said Thursday it is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan after commanders in the field requested additional forces.

As part of a large-scale offensive that began in May, more than 10,000 coalition and Afghan troops have been deployed in four southern provinces to kill or capture Taleban insurgents.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
