Coalition, Afghan Troops Kill 19 Taleban Militants, Local Commander By VOA News 13 July 2006 Authorities in southern Afghanistan say U.S.-led coalition forces and Afghan troops have repelled a major Taleban attack, killing 19 militants. Officials in Helmand province say the militants were apparently trying to overrun a district police headquarters in Nawzad late Wednesday, but that government forces counterattacked, killing seven insurgents. A coalition airstrike killed 12 more militants. In another battle Wednesday, in the same province, the coalition said it killed a local Taleban commander. In a separate incident Thursday, a bomb attached to a bicycle exploded in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, wounding at least four people. And, police in Kabul arrested an Afghan man trying to plant a bomb outside the Information and Culture Ministry building. More than 10,000 coalition and Afghan troops have launched a major offensive against Taleban insurgents in eastern and southern Afghanistan since May.
