Chinese arrest German journalist for asking the right questions

German journalists (like their politicians) usually bend over backwards not to ever offend anybody whenever dealing with dictatorial regimes, but Zeit journalist Georg Blume must have suffered a blackout the other day while on assignment in China’s Yunnan province. He actually had the audacity to question farmers being relocated due to the planned construction of a controversial new dam project in that area.

Blume was promptly arrested for conducting these “illegal interviews” and government officials demanded that he hand over his notes and the film material he had collected. In an even more audacious and unprecedented step, Blume then refused to do so.

And not only that, this guy has had run-ins with the Chinese before. He obviously doesn’t get it. After all, the Chinese government is obviously only doing this for his own good. You see a Chinese civil rights activist who recently spoke to Germany’s Channel 1 (ARD) about this very project was beaten up for having done so by “unknown assailants” and is now a quadriplegic. Crime can sometimes run wild at certain times and specific locations in totalitarian states it seems.

After promising to leave the area and stop conducting these interviews, Blume was then allowed to go. I sure hope that this brave dummy finally gets it this time. Not.
