China and Japan Agree to Keep Talking on Drilling for Gas in Disputed Seabed By Thomas Rippe Hong Kong 09 July 2006 China and Japan have ended talks in Beijing on a dispute over exploring gas fields in the East China Sea. Both nations agreed to appoint technical experts to address the issue. Two days of talks ended without a breakthrough as Japan and China attempted to resolve differences over the right to develop gas resources in the East China Sea. Officials say the two countries agreed to establish an expert technical group to look at access rights in the disputed area. Keiji Ide, a spokesman for the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, says they also agreed to keep talking. "This is the sixth round of meetings. In previous meetings also they agreed to continue discussions," he said. No date has been set for the seventh round of negotiations. China is drilling in gas fields very near Japanese waters, which Tokyo fears might be siphoning its reserves. This story originally ran at VOANews.com This story was originally posted here.
