California Firefighters Brace for New Fire Threats By VOA News 16 July 2006 Fire crews battling California wildfires are bracing for storms they say could produce lightning capable of starting new fires. The National Weather Service Sunday predicted at least a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms at the scene of the fires. Nearly 4,000 have struggled for days to surround the fires, which have destroyed more than 160 homes and nearly 300 square kilometers of land in the high desert, 160 kilometers east of Los Angeles. Firefighters are trying to encircle the fires before they reach mountain resort towns where thousands of people live. Before today's threat of lightning, higher humidity and slightly lower temperatures had helped crews make progress with the fires. Police say the body of a man missing since one of the fires roared through historic Pioneertown, California last week was found Saturday.
