Bombs Hit Two Government Buses in Kabul

By VOA News
05 July 2006

Afghan police say bomb blasts have hit two buses in the capital, Kabul, killing at least one person and wounding about 40 others.

The buses were transporting Afghan government workers and security forces during rush hour Wednesday morning.

Police say the two blasts were caused by explosives packed into hand carts and detonated when government buses drove by.

The first blast hit an Afghan army bus in downtown Kabul, wounding 39 personnel on board, most of them only slightly.

A second explosion struck a bus taking Commerce Ministry employees to work in the north of the city. One person was killed and four were wounded in that attack.

Police say a third bomb went off on a road in eastern Kabul, but no casualties were reported.

It is the second straight day that bombs have exploded in the Afghan capital, which has rarely experienced such attacks in recent years.

A Tuesday bombing in central Kabul wounded several people a short distance from the presidential palace and Afghanistan's Justice Ministry.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
