Wimbledon: Williams, Mauresmo Advance to Next Round By VOA Sports 28 June 2006
Defending champion Venus Williams of the United States and world number one Amelie Mauresmo of France have easily advanced at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London. Williams scored a straight-set win over compatriot Bethanie Mattek, 6-1, 6-0. Williams plays another American, Lisa Raymond, in the next round. Raymond advanced when her opponent, Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia retired in the first set. Mauresmo scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Croatian Ivana Abramovic. Former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia was another winner, ousting Anna Smashnova of Israel, 6-2, 6-0. Ninth seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia advanced with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Zimbabwe's Cara Black. In men's action, third seed Andy Roddick took four sets but ousted Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, (6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-2). Fourth-seed David Nalbandian of Argentina defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-3). Former champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia downed Italian Filippo Volandri (6-1, 6-1, 6-3). Alejandro Falla of Colombia defeated ninth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in four sets, (2-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3). Falla plays German Philipp Kohlschreiber, a straight-set winner over Razvan Sabau (6-3, 6-2, 6-4). Finland's Jarkko Nieminen scored a straight-sets win over Brazilian Marcos Daniel (6-2, 6-4, 7-5). Nieminen faces Britain's Martin Lee, a three-set winner over Dick Norman of Belgium (6-2, 7-6, 7-6). American Mardy Fish ousted compatriot Robby Ginepri (6-3, 6-2, 6-4). Fish plays Melle Van Gemerden of the Netherlands, who beat Britain's Joshua Goodall (6-4, 7-5, 7-5). Russia's Dmitry Tursunov defeated Thailand's Danai Udomchoke (6-1, 6-4, 6-2).
