WAKE UP CALL FOR GUANGZHOU HOTELS: CANTON TRADE FAIR VISITORS GET TO SLEEP IN CHEAPLY ![]() There are usually two sets of menus for restaurants in Guangzhou: One is for the Canton Trade fair and its 200,000+ International Businessmen every six months and the other is for those here the other 48 weeks of the year. Everything in town, still cheap by western standards, jumps in cost 50-100%. The hotel rates, held down now by a two-year old law, can still climb 2-6 times the normal fare. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair service providers now will need to reconsider some marketing strategies. And it is a smart businessman who will check with local expat services in Guangzhou before putting the "kick me I'm foreign" sign on his back. Some hotels in Guangzhou's suburbs, or nearby cities, are now competing for fair-goers. One five-star hotel in nearby Dongguan offers rooms and daily shuttles for abut $70.00 USD a night. The triumphant 100th Canton Fair will kick off Soon. But, the Southern Metropolis Daily said hotels in Guangzhou will have many rooms vacant: "According to one of Guangzhou's largest travel agencies, more than 1,000 (during the 99th session) rooms in downtown hotels were still vacant the week of the fair" Although the Guangzhou government intervened to cap hotel rates during the Canton Fair a couple of years ago, complaints about exceptionally high rates and a room shortage have been reported during each fair. And the smart competition in neighboring areas upped their rates a meager 10% to cover shuttle fees and other fair amenities and it worked! The influx of foreign buyers is estimated to be the same as at last fair, while about 300,000 domestic exhibitors will attend the fair. The math is too high for me to do, but I know that while a lot of money will be spent and taken in by areas businesses, but lots can be saved by savvy foreign visitors.
