US Army Dog Handler Sentenced to Hard Labor for Abu Ghraib Abuse By VOA News 02 June 2006 A military court has sentenced a U.S. Army dog handler to 90 days hard labor for using his dog to threaten an Iraqi detainee. The court also demoted Sergeant Santos Cardona in rank and ordered him to forfeit $7,200 in pay. He will not be confined during his sentence. A military jury in Maryland on Thursday convicted the 32-year-old enlisted man of dereliction of duty and aggravated assault stemming from the abuse at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison. He had faced up to three-and-one-half years in prison. Cardona is the 11th U.S. soldier to be held accountable for abuse at Abu Ghraib in late 2003 and early 2004. The jury acquitted Santos of other charges, including having his dog bite a prisoner. Santos' lawyers argued he was following orders. The abuse at Abu Ghraib sparked outrage and protests in various parts of the world after photographs emerged of prisoners being abused and sexually humiliated.
