Turkey and Greece Announce Confidence Building Measures By VOA News 11 June 2006 Turkey and Greece have agreed upon confidence building measures in an attempt to defuse tension between the long-time rivals. In Istanbul Saturday, the foreign ministers for Greece and Turkey, Dora Bakoyannis and Abdullah Gul, said measures include the creation of a hotline for the nations' air force commanders. The move comes weeks after Greek and Turkish fighter jets collided over the Aegean Sea, further fueling animosity between the countries. The Greek pilot was killed, while the Turkish one was injured. Gul also says a Turkish military official has invited his Greek counterpart to visit Turkey. Greece and Turkey came close to war in 1996 over a disputed Aegean island. Relations have warmed since then, but there has been no progress in resolving the territorial disputes. Some information for this report provided by Reuters and AFP.
