Tennis: Irregular Betting Investigation Surrounds Wimbledon Match By VOA Sports 28 June 2006 Tennis officials have started investigating reports of irregular betting activity surrounding a first-round Wimbledon match between Richard Bloomfield of Britain and world 89th-ranked Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. Reports say more than a $500,000 in bets were placed on Berlocq to lose Tuesday's match to Bloomfield, who is ranked 170 places below the Argentine. Bloomfield won by the lopsided score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. The betting agency alerted the International Tennis Federation and Britain's Lawn Tennis Association of the unusual betting pattern, which drew in about 30 times more bets than similar matches. Bloomfield, 23, who was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon in 2003 and 2004, had never won a match on the main ATP Tour. Berlocq, who has been more successful on clay courts than grass, was making his first appearance at Wimbledon. Bloomfield is scheduled to play Germany's Tommy Haas Wednesday in the second round.
