Storm Surge Forces Hundreds to Evacuate in Central America

By VOA News
21 June 2006

Authorities in Central America say hundreds of people have evacuated their homes along the Pacific coast after huge waves generated thousands of kilometers away flooded their towns. There were no reports of deaths.

Severe weather in the South Pacific, off the coast of New Zealand, caused the storm surge.

A forecaster with the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Hugh Cobb, says the storm whipped up waves four-meters high. He says the waves began moving across the Galapagos Islands on Sunday, and reached the coast of Central America a day later.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm surge began to retreat on Tuesday.

Flood damage is reported in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama.

High waves were also seen on beaches as far away as Mexico and southern California.
