Right-wing extremism ain't what it used to be

Did you know that the Bush administration is "a renegade band of right-wing extremists?" That's according to Al Gore, that paragon of sharp-honed analytical incisiveness, in an interview with the British paper, the Guardian, during a recent trip to Britain.

But just what is it that makes them such "right-wing extremists?"

Is it because Bush hasn't gotten on board with Kyoto to save the planet from certain destruction? Global warming is Gore's number one issue, something he is convinced will destroy human civilization if drastic measures aren't taken within the next ten years. He's even got a movie out about it.

Funny thing is, the Senate voted against Kyoto during the Clinton-Gore administration and it wasn't exactly a close vote. To be specific, the vote was unanimous against it. Unanimous! Not 60-40, not 55-45, not 52-48, not divided along party lines. Unanimous! Not one single Democrat voted in favor of Kyoto.

Well, okay then, it must be that war in Iraq, mustn't it? Although, on second thought, removing Saddam, or at least having the openly stated and desired goal of removing Saddam, was the official policy of -- guess who? -- the Clinton-Gore administration. Is it right-wing extremism to simply follow through on the stated goal of a previous administration that didn't itself have the guts to implement that policy?

Well then, what about those warrantless wiretaps, or instances of "domestic spying," that so many were so hot and bothered by? Actually, that won't fly either, given that such things occurred during -- all together now -- the Clinton-Gore administration, not to mention plenty of others, including even that of the saintly Jimmy Carter.

How about the Bush administration's xenophobic hatred of immigrants? Nope, sorry. This president has had to be dragged kicking and screaming to even make the appearance that he's doing anything about stemming the tide of illegals. And despite his insistence to the contrary, he still wants what amounts to amnesty for the millions that are already here.

Neither can Gore's characterization of the Bush administration have anything to do with the Republican obsession of reducing the size and scope of the national government since that has increased at a faster rate during the Bush administration than at any time in American history.

Nor are free prescription drugs for all seniors a good example of right-wing extremism. Nor is No Child Left Behind. Nor is . . . Well, you get the idea.

The description of the Bush administration as "a renegade band of right-wing extremists" is just one more in a long list of Al Gore's disconnects with reality. We all wait with bated breath to see what the next will be. Maybe another run for the presidency . . . ?
