Palestinian Government to Pay Overdue Salaries By VOA News 03 June 2006 The Palestinian finance minister says the government will begin paying overdue salaries to some of its employees on Monday. Omar Abdel-Razeq made the pledge Saturday at a news conference amid mounting protests over non-payment of wages. Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Friday banks would start paying salaries to 40,000 workers in the next day or two. The Palestinian government has about 165,000 employees on its payroll. International economic sanctions over the Hamas-led government's refusal to disarm and recognize Israel have rendered the Palestinian government unable to pay salaries since it took power in March. The three months of unpaid salaries have fueled friction in the Palestinian territories and threatened the stability of the new Hamas government.
