Official Celebrations Held for Queen Elizabeth's 80th Birthday By VOA News 18 June 2006 Thousands of people gathered near London's Buckingham Palace for pomp-filled celebrations to honor the 80th birtday of Queen Elizabeth the Second. British soldiers Saturday marched in formation and saluted as they presented themselves to the monarch. Queen Elizabeth rode to the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip. Prince Harry, as well as his uncle Prince Andrew, and cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, led the royal parade. Prince Charles followed his mother's carriage on horseback. Upon returning to the palace, Royal Air Force jets flew overhead in an aerial display. Queen Elizabeth was actually born on April 21, but official celebrations are held in June to take advantage of warmer weather. Some information for this report provided by AP and Reuters.
