LEARN CHINESE ONLINE FOR FREE OR AT LOW COST

by Lonnie Hodge

CONFUCIUS

I own every language text published or at least my bookshelf looks like that is the case. I have everything for Rosetta Stone to Berlitz. It was a ton of wasted money because I invariably get sidetracked, lazy or hit a hurdle I cannot seem to jump without help. Nothing beats having a live teacher available to learn language; but, for those of you who are adept at self paced learning there are ways to cheaply master the fastest growing language in the world online:

Yong Zhao is the executive director of Michigan State's Confucius Institute, which opened May 15. It is one of eight in the U.S., out of 40 worldwide, that is funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Its purpose is to encourages and promote the study of Chinese culture and language.

The Chicago Public Schools just opened a Confucius Institute: CFI at Walter Payton High School, the institute will offer education and support to students and teachers.

As for Zhao, he's launching the first online language courses taught by the institute. Starting in the fall, these classes will be offered to Michigan high school students at: CFIM

And here is a great resource:
ChinesePod

An "on-demand" language-learning podcast that offers free daily sound files you can download to your favorite listening device. I have been to their site and am quite impressed.
Chengo Chinese

Another is CHENGO

This too is a freebie for kids 12-18 (might be too advanced for me) and consists of 35 50-minute "episodes." A joint project between the U.S. Department of Education and the Chinese Ministry of Education, it covers speech, handwriting, culture and customs.

For those of you in need of a live assistant there are several inexpensive online tutors that offer Skype or Yahoo! based online video tutoring. Check the sidebar at OMBW.

If you want an immersion course in Cantonese or Mandarin and want some martial arts thrown in at a great price check out: OMBW

If you have suggestions or know of others, please let me know.

I tried TeLL me More Chinese by Auralog (www.auralog.com) and found it much better than any other software. Indeed, it is much more interactive than Rosetta Stone (I got so tired of these 4 pcitures) and also has more content.
To learn with a software requires time but it was much cheaper for me than signing up for a class and I found it very effective, especially as I traveled to China this Spring.
