Heavy Rains Flood US Northeast

By VOA News
27 June 2006

Washington, DC is bracing for more rain after a deluge closed federal offices and tourist attractions Monday.

The tax collection agency, the Commerce and Justice Departments, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives where historical documents are stored were all closed Monday after 18 centimeters of rain fell in Washington in a 24 hour period.

The rain caused transit problems and closed roads. It also toppled a 100-year-old elm tree at the White House.

In recent days heavy rains have swelled rivers and saturated the ground throughout the northeastern U.S., making many places vulnerable to flash flooding.

Parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware recorded one to two meters of flood waters. The flash floods have stranded motorists, washed out roads and caused blackouts.

Weather forecasters predict the rains will continue for the next few days and warn of additional flooding.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
