HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY FROM CHINA

By Lonnie Hodge

Children's day is celebrated in concert with International Children's day which is said to have originated at the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.

It is thought that June 1st was the choice for the celebration day because the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco, California invited a group of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, also in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year and happened to coincide with the Geneva conference.

June 1 is recognized especially by Communist countries while other countries have special days set aside. An example is Japan's Kodomo no Hi (Children's Day) in May. Then they fly kites in the shape of carp to symbolize children facing adversity and achieving success in spite of it.
