Haitian Kidnappers Release Canadian Missionary By VOA News 26 June 2006 A Canadian missionary kidnapped last week has been released by his captors after a ransom was paid. Seventy two-year-old Ed Hughes was released late Saturday. A police official said Hughes was released after officers conducted an operation in the area where he was held. He was kidnapped from the orphanage he runs just north of Port-au-Prince. A friend who spoke to Hughes said he plans to stay in Haiti and return to the orphanage. Hughes had been a victim of crime before. In 1995, he was shot and badly wounded by gunmen who were trying to kidnap someone else at the mission. Security officials in Haiti say they have noticed an increase in crime and violence in recent weeks.
