Ghana's Next Foe is Powerful Czech Team

By Parke Brewer
16 June 2006

The African football teams have yet to win a game so far at the World Cup in Germany. In Group-E, Ghana lost its opener to Italy, 2-0, in Hanover and next has to take on the Czech Republic Saturday in Cologne.

It does not get any easier for Ghana, as the Czech Republic is ranked second in the world. The Czechs were impressive in their 3-0 shutout over the United States in their first match.

However, Czech strikers Milan Baros and Jan Koller will both be sidelined against Ghana because of injuries. Baros also missed the opener with an injured foot and Koller suffered a hamstring injury against the United States. Thirty-two year-old Vratislav Lokvenc is set to fill in as the lone striker.

Ghana's Serbian coach Ratomir Dujkovic says his team will be aggressive. "Of course we have to start from the beginning trying to score goals and win this match. It will be difficult for us but it wont be easy for the Czech Republic, of course, because our team is competitive and they never give up, from the beginning until the final (whistle)," he said.

Without a victory, it will be very difficult for Ghana to reach the World Cup's second round, even if it beats the United States in the final Group-E match next Thursday.
