From Lampstand to Museum: Rare Ming Vase Draws Record $10M Auction Bid

By VOA News
30 May 2006

An extremely rare 600-year-old vase that was once used by unknowing owners as a lampstand has been sold at a Hong Kong auction for a record price.

Officials from auctioneer Christie's Hong Kong said Tuesday U.S. gaming magnate Steve Wynn bought the copper-red pear-shaped vase for more than $10 million.

Made during the early Ming Dynasty, the vase was the first of its kind to be offered at auction in more than 15 years.

The material used to create the copper-red hue is said to have made producing such a vase so difficult that potters asked the royal court to curtail their orders.

After the record bid, officials said Wynn, the owner of Wynn Resorts, would donate the vase to a museum in Macao, so the artifact can be seen by all Chinese people.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
