CANCER IN CHINA: THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY CHINESE WOMEN

by Lonnie Hodge OMBW

MS YUE AND THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY CHINESE WOMEN

These are the members of the League of Extraordinary Chinese Women. They have defied all Chinese convention in an effort to get well: They play badminton with a $7.00 children's set; they walk and talk together for hours; they call each other with breaking news of Hong Kong infidelity among celebrities they learned about from rented magazines; they watch cheap DVDs that make them laugh; they, who are old enough they cannot remember China having spiritual resources, attend sanctioned masses, visit services and hike nearby mountains to see area temples in a quest not for a heavenly fast repair job, but for enlightenment and guidance.

They practice, with deep sincerity, what mind-body evangelists worldwide preach: community, love, prayer, meditation, laughter and exercise. They take conventional and Chinese medicines while eating a diet that would keep most of us healthy into our nineties. And no one told them how to do this. No therapist had to charge them $100 an hour to wake them to the joys of living minute to minute.

They all are battling the most violent and tenacious of female cancer foes: HER2 breast cancer. They have lost one member while another is currently fending off a return of the disease while another is going through a divorce brought by a husband who cannot accept her disease. But, they cheerfully continue to hope and unfailingly support one another.

They meet for tea and chip in, even though all their resources are meager, and pay for the one woman who, not pictured, hasn't even the money for a single cup. They become a riotous cacophony of Cantonese chatter about everything from children to husbands and a future without disease. They have all shed their wigs and decided to proudly run against the social current in China and no longer care that people might find them untouchable because they are sick.

They have probably lived longer than expected already. Lacking insurance, none of them have been able to afford the only drug that can assist them: Herceptin. Ms Yue was given a watered down dose of conventional chemotherapy despite being at stage 3A (they are 1,2,3,3A and 4) in her journey. The others are slowly turning to inexpensive herbal cures to save their families from bankruptcy.

I hardly know how to write about them. There is no need to poeticize or embellish what they do or who they are. The picture you see should be enough to move you to tears and a thankful re-evaluation of what is important in your life.

Blessings on the League of Extraordinary Chinese Women.

FYI: The Carnival of Liberty is up at COL I promise you will enjoy it.
