THE TOP TEN BLOGS ABOUT CHINA

by Lonnie Hodge

I've long knowv that my blog's sidebar is a bit daunting what with all of the links listed there, so I wanted to post a new China Blog Top Ten List for you. I will do this from time to time to introduce you to blogs I frequent whenever time, and the authorities, allow. These are expat blogs, but I will be posting a broader list soon.

Get Wired:
CHINA TOP TEN BLOGS

One of Japan's biggest newspapers carries the slogan,"Without fear of Favor" and I have tried to emulate that here. I have tried to pick from a range of categories and have given no extra points to those who link back to onemanbandwidth: That has never been a requirement for a recommendation.

In Alphabetical Order:

Asiapundit: ASIAPUNDIT
A funny, insightful, well researched and irreverent look at China. From stories (and pictures) of Chinese women kissing in front of Mao's picture in Beijing to campaigns meant to free dissident bloggers. They have their hearts minds and fine writing on display here. These guys have the biggest cyber-balls in the China blogsphere.

Chief Asian Inspector CAS is an absolute must-read for anyone exploring doing business in China. He explores customs (the ones with a badge and the ones you abide by in daily life), business trends, and current supply chain news. he does this with a pleasing writing style and the voice of real authority from an experienced hand in the Middle Kingdom.

China Digital Times CDT The most ambitious and successful China News Aggregator in Cyberspace. It is all here: Political, Social, Environmental....Sadly, they are blocked in the mainland, but available to the most of the rest of the world. They aptly call themselves: "...a collaborative news weblog covering China's social and political transition and its emerging role in the global community. It aims to serve as a news aggregator, resource center, and an interactive community...." Since Peter Porcupine CCP (read his blog, which I just noticed abbreviates as CCP, for the most sensible and informed of conservative American opinions) paid me the honor of calling me a classic "Berkley Liberal" I had to include CDT!

My dislike for lawyers is in inverse proportion for my admiration of The China Law Blog:CLB says it focuses on business law in China. It is written by Dan Harris, an International lawyer based in the United States and Steve Dickinson, also an international lawyer, based in China. You will get a lot more here than legal briefs (don't visulaize that) and pitches. This is, as I have said before, the best researched business site about China. And you will glean great perspectives on everything from entrepreneurship to the pending suit against China's knock-off of the American Idol show. They call themselves a, jeez, "Boutique Law Firm" but, I would not want to go shopping for a win in court against these Legal Eye for the Laowai Guys.

Danwei's Blog
is group written and purports to be a website about media, advertising, and urban life in China. It is far more: They have, pardon the hackneyed expression, their finger on the pulse of grass roots blogging, both Chinese and Expat, better than any other blog. They often will provide well translated stories from the Mainland media. It is an often cocky and opinionated site, but has the write muscle to back it up.

Global Voices Online: GVO One of the most ambitious human rights efforts in the blogsphere: This is P.E.N., Amnesty International, and a dozen other important groups all rolled into one online repository of human interest stories, important news articles on human rights worldwide, and heartsongs from the best bloggers in the world.

The Opposite Side of China: TOSC is easily my favorite one-man adventure in China. This is news, staggering photos, and fearless commentary about mysterious and troubled Northwest China. This is one of the best cyber-journalists in the business.

Talk Talk China TTC is the funniest group of Bozos on the China blog bus. This is the BLA: The Blog Liberation Army of the expat' psyche. If you have thought it, they have probably already written about it and made thousands of people laugh while doing it. The most comment filled site in the Middle Kingdom. I remember whrn they were paying adwords to draw in traffic. Now I hope they are making a few bucks of those blood-sucking, censor supporting....Oops, I digress...

The Mask of China: MAC is by a fellow educator and damn fine writer and photographer. He just did a series of posts from the Yunnan area: mandatory reading for those in this class. An escapee from the mainland to the crowded creature comforts of Hong Kong he deftly writes about politics, travel and perseverance in China.

ALL of the China blogs in my first links list are more than worth your time. Here are two more resources for a list of China Bloggers:

Mishoni's List is a great resource. Don't pay attention to the rankings of blogs, just read them.

The Chinese Blog List: CBT plays favorites a bit, but does monumentally good things for China Bloggers. Here you will find the most comprehensive list of bloggers, banned and approved, in or about China.

Yes, I am missing one so, please send me your favorites.

I think a lot of the people on this list would agree that EastSouthWestNorth belongs there as well.

What feng37 said. A startling oversight, if I may be so bold. But one that I hope will be corrected soon.

Justin, and Feng,
It simply has not been a site I had spent much time on. I will now.

I am gladly adding it as my #10.

It is just a subjective list and by no means a definitive top ten, but I hope it will bring more traffic to deserving blogs: ones that chide as well as laud China during its transitions.

ESNW is a delightfully clean site with an immense number of well written articles as well as reprints of important information concerning China life and affairs.

ESNW goes to a great deal of trouble to present news that the West would otherwise never be able to access.

When vacation comes and I am able to read more blogs I am sure that I will find a few more to add, but they have quite a standard to meet if compared to ESNW.

Thanks for your help!

LON
