Saddam Defense Witness Disputes 148 Shi'ites Were Killed By VOA News 30 May 2006 A defense witness says that some of the Shi'ite men who Saddam Hussein allegedly ordered killed after an attempt on his life in 1982 are still alive. The anonymous witness made the claim during the former Iraqi leader's trial Tuesday in Baghdad. Saddam and seven co-defendants are facing charges of crimes against humanity in connection to the deaths of 148 Shi'ite Muslims. Tuesday's session opened with the chief judge saying the court would never be able to finish hearing testimony if the defense team comes up with a new list of witnesses every day. Saddam immediately insisted that the defense be given as much time as the prosecution, which presented its case during the first five months of the trial that began in October.
