Office of Profit Returns - Will Kalam go for the Jugular

It now appears that the ruling UPA Government of India and its coalition partners in crime the Communist Parties are determined to return the Office of Profit Bill in its current form to be approved once again by the Parliament.

Indications to this have been reported across all major Indian News Media outlets. The official pronouncements of the Indian Congress Party and off the cuff remarks from leading Communist Members of Parliament leaves little doubt that the ruling political class would not act in deference to President Kalam's cocnerns.

While some Indian media reports indicate that country's Election Commission would act with a renewed sense of urgency on the pending complaints before it on those legislators that are holding Offices of Profit, the lengthy process involved means most of them will in all likelihood escape punitive action.

Having raised the consitutional stakes on this issue, the question haunting the minds of most political observers in India, is does the Indian President have any more constitutional aces to pull if the Indian Parliament returns the Office of Profit Bill without any changes back to him for his assent.

APJ Abdul Kalam has been put in the dock once before by the ruling UPA Government by making him a party to a gross constitutional violation in the imposition of President's Rule in Bihar last year. The Indian Supreme Court had then passed severe strictures on Sonia Gandhi's Congress Government for acting in violation of the Indian Constitution.

Given this experience Offstumped strongly believes that Dr. Kalam took a very well considered and determined step in returning the Office of Profit Bill with serious concerns. In the event of the Indian Parliament ignoring his concerns or paying lip service to them returns the Bill back to himm, the question is Will Dr. Kalam go for the UPA's jugular ?

Offstumped strongly believes that Dr. Kalam must not relent on this issue and allow himself to become a party to this Constitutional travesty. Dr. Kalam must summon all Constitutional provisions that maybe be available to him to resist the move by the political class to push this legislation through. If need be Offstumped calls on the Indian President to venture where no Indian President has ventured before and stake his Presidency on his stance on the issue.

Being a pioneer is a trait not alien to the Indian President with many firsts to his credit. Offstumped hopes Dr. Abdul Kalam will not betray the hopes of all right minded Indian Citizens by giving in on this issue and takes it to its logical end, even if it means precipitating a Constitutional Crisis.
