New health warnings on cigarette packs Associate Minister of Health, Damien O'Connor, has launched a proposal which would mean that warnings, image and text, would cover 60% of the cigarette packs in New Zealand. The new images would cover throat cancer, rotting teeth/gums and gangrenous feet. Ashley Bloomfield, Chief Advisor on Public Health, says written warnings aren't as effective as pictures. He says many smokers do not know most of the diseases that smoking can cause. The ministry will tell the tobacco companys the size and placement of the images and will not subsidise the cost of the images. Sources
