Moussaoui Sentenced to Life in Prison
The U.S. jury deciding the fate of al-Qaida conspirator Zacharias Moussaoui has sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The 12-member federal jury in the U.S. state of Virginia had been deliberating for seven days on whether to sentence the 37-year-old Frenchman to death or life in prison. A unanimous decision was required to sentence him to death. Federal judge Leonie Brinkema is to formally hand down the sentence Thursday morning. The 9-man, 3-woman jury had previously ruled Moussaoui was responsible for at least one death in connection with the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and therefore eligible for the death penalty. Moussaoui is the only person in the United States to be convicted in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy last year.
