Juventus Picks Up Its 29th Italian League Title With a 2-0 Win Over Reggina

By VOA Sports
14 May 2006

Italian football club Juventus has picked up its 29th Italian league title with a 2-0 win over Reggina Sunday, but the victory was clouded by a growing scandal over match-fixing in Serie A.

Juventus finished the season three points ahead of second placed AC Milan, which hosted a 2-1 win over AS Roma. But Juventus is facing a series of investigations linked to allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting. If found guilty, the team could be stripped of its last two titles and demoted to Serie B.

Published transcripts of telephone conversations between Juventus general director Luciano Moggi and Italian football federation officials alleged collusion about referee assignments last season. Just days after Moggi and the rest of the Juventus board resigned over the allegations, a tearful Moggi announced Sunday that he would also resign as the team's general director.

Prosecutors in Naples, Rome, Parma and Turin have placed over 40 people under investigation. In the backlash of the growing scandal, Italian football federation president Franco Carraro stepped down from his post and four teams - Juventus, Lazio, AC Milan and Fiorentina - are getting a closer look from investigators.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
