COUNTERFEIT DVDs STINK....THEY MUST BECAUSE... Dogs have come a long way since St. Bernards were trained for rescue. Some of them have more schooling than I do.  The police have yet another chore for career minded mutts: Fake DVD sniffing! It seems that black Labrador dogs have become the first in the world to be trained to sniff out counterfeit movies. The dogs - named Luck and Flo (Ebb would have a better choice) - have already field-trialed at FedEx's Stansted hub in the UK. They successfully discovered DVDs in parcels and packages even though none of them were bootleg. I have seen a lot of flicks that stink lately, but none of them tipped me off in advance-- Now, if we could only we could get a dog to do that! Mr Ian Leinster, director general of the UK-based Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT). FACT teamed up with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to train the dogs. The process took eight months ( Most of the dogs refused to sniff out Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians and several other Disney flicks...sorry) to complete. Airports are fast becoming a dog's world: drugs, explosives, food and now bootleg DVDs. These particular pooches above are expected to return to class to make sure they can tell the difference between a pirated or studio released disk. DVD piracy is a growing problem in the US and the UK. FACT alone seized over two million counterfeit DVDs last year. My guess is a bundle of them originated here in China. Next trip to the airport: leave the illegal stuff in your hotel and do watch where you step!
