WASHINGTON, May 4, 2006 - Combat operations continue in Iraq as U.S. Marines and Iraqi forces engaged enemy fighters after two attacks in recent days.

Coalition forces killed eight insurgents when they responded to an insurgent attack in central Ramadi today.

U.S. Marines from 2nd Battalion, 28th Brigade Combat Team, were attacked multiple times with rocket-propelled grenades, medium machine-gun fire, and small-arms fire from a building near the Ramadi government center. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, heavy machine-gun fire, grenades, and ground-launched precision-guided munitions. No coalition or civilian casualties resulted from the incident.

Elsewhere, a homicide bomber attacked a Fallujah police recruiting checkpoint yesterday morning. The insurgent walked toward a group of civilians gathered at the entrance to the checkpoint and detonated explosives concealed on his body. At least seven civilians were killed and 12 wounded in the attack. One Iraqi police officer was also wounded.

U.S. Marines from Regimental Combat Team 5 responded to the incident and assisted Fallujah police officers in securing the scene. The recruiting process was reopened about an hour after the attack, and recruits continued to volunteer.

"The fact that an overwhelming number of recruits arrived immediately after the attack signifies the local rejection of the intimidation and terrorism," Marine Col. Larry D. Nicholson, commanding officer of Regimental Combat Team 5, said. "The people of Fallujah continue to look forward not back and understand that the way ahead, the road to progress and the path to self-governance depends on being part of the new Iraqi government."

In other news, U.S. Marines attached to Multinational Division Baghdad discovered a large weapons cache April 30 in a village west of Baghdad. The huge cache included hundreds of assorted rounds, rockets, mortars and explosives. An explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the cache.
