Another Kennedy crack-up: Will wonders never cease?

Will wonders never cease? There's been another Kennedy crack-up, this time involving prescription drugs, sleeping pills, a Ford Mustang and a Capitol Hill street barrier at 2:45 in the morning. Amazing how fate continues to orchestrate such unpropitious events for this simultaneously blessed and accursed family.

This time it was Rep. Patrick Kennedy, son of Teddy Kennedy, a real chip off the old block. All sorts of stories are flying around that he had been drinking, that he was zonked on prescription medication, that his lame story about rushing to a vote was a crock, that the Capitol Police gave him a pass. We'll just have to be patient and wait for things to settle down a bit before we know the full truth. No doubt it will all come out in the whitewash -- er, I mean, the wash.

But speaking of whitewashes, one thing suddenly occurs to me. How long before Cynthia McKinney makes an issue out of the difference in the way she was treated by Capitol Police and the way the white Kennedy was treated? Kennedy crashes a car in the wee hours while possibly intoxicated, or at least impaired, and gets a ride home. McKinney walks past a routine security check and is assaulted and threatened with jail time.

You have to admit that if she were to push that line of reasoning, then okay, yeah, she'd maybe, possibly, sorta have a little bit of a point. On the other hand, she'd have to try and understand that this really transcends race because we're talking about a Kennedy here, a member of America's royal family, and that does have its special privileges.

If it's any consolation to McKinney, most of the Kennedys are Democrats, which means that they continue to fight for the cause of civil rights as if nothing had changed since 1955, which is just like most black civil rights leaders and just like McKinney herself.

One other consolation: O.J. Simpson. He's black, he slaughtered two white people and he walked out of the courthouse a free man. That certainly wouldn't have happened in 1955.
