AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP: AMERICAN FLIERS FINALLY LAID TO REST During WWII China and America embraced each other in real comradery to defeat the Imperial Japanese. The world has long celebrated the exploits of Doolittle's daring group, the Flying Tigers and other extraordinary heroes. ![]() The world has long celebrated the exploits of Doolittle's daring group, the Flying Tigers and other extraordinary heroes. All soldiers, and not because I once served as one, are exemplars of patriotism. But, the men of World War II, facing impossible odds, sacrificed careers, families, and often futures, to defend against tyranny, genocide and oppresion in ways we modern soldiers proudly admire. Today, May 9, 2006, after 62 years on Chinese soil, another group of brave men will return home be laid to rest with fellow warriors in famed Arlington Cemetery. The flyers belonged to one of several crews of airmen who flew dangerous missions over the mysterious mountains we call The Himalayas. The pilots knew this jouney as "The Hump" and flew to re-supply Allied forces fighting in the Pacific. Pilot Capt. Douglas R. Wight of Westfield, N.J.; Co-Pilot 1st Lt. Herbert W. Evans of Rapid City S.D.; Crew Chief Cpl. John W. Hanlon of Arnett, Okla.; and Radio Operator Pfc. Gerald L. Rugers, Jr., of Tacoma, Wash., lost radio contact with their base station and never reached their intended destination. According to a Department of Defense news release: "Officials from the People’s Republic of China notified the U.S. in early 2001 that the wreckage of an American WWII aircraft had been found on Meiduobai Mountain in a remote area of Tibet. The following year, a joint U.S.-P.R.C. team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated the site where they found human remains, aircraft debris and personal items related to the crew." DNA results have confirmed the identity of crew members. ![]() Chinese Asia China Blog Flying Tigers Doolittle Arlington Lonnie Hodge Guangzhou WWII South China China Photos Kumming Japan China ONEMANBANDWIDTH Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
