An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck Indonesia's Central Java province Saturday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake struck at 5:54 a.m. local time (2354 UTC Friday) approximately 25 km (15 miles) southwest of the Central Java city of Yogyakarta.

Damage has been reported in the city, with electricity and communications down. At least 15 people have been reported dead and dozens of other injured, a spokesperson at the local hospital said.

Nearby Mount Merapi, which has seen increased activity in recent weeks, had emitted a large cloud of smoke and ash shortly before the earthquake. It is not clear at this point if the earthquake and volcanic activity are linked.
